DALLAS, Texas (KETK) – Dallas police have officially identified the man found shot to death at a Dallas apartment complex as Joshua Brown, the neighbor of Botham Jean who testified in Amber Guyger’s trial.

Dallas police responded to reports of a shooting Friday night at about 10:30 p.m.

They found Brown lying in the apartment parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds.

Brown was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and saw a silver four-door sedan speeding out of the parking lot.

Accounts differ on where Brown was shot. Some say he was shot in the back and thigh, others say mouth and chest.

An unnamed “government official” speaking anonymously told the Dallas Morning News he was shot in the back and thigh.

Police have not yet released a description of any suspects or an official statement on the shooting.

Dallas County prosecutor Jason Hermus, the lead prosecutor in the Guyger case, said Saturday that Brown stood up at a time when others won’t say what they know. It’s said this prosecutor confirmed it was Joshua Brown who was shot about 10:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of Cedar Springs Road.

Joshua Brown was 28 years old, originally from Jacksonville, Florida, but moved to Texas in 2008. He testified in defense of Botham Jean on day two of Amber Guyger’s trial.

In part of his testimony, Joshua Brown describes hearing Botham Jean sing in the mornings. Brown lived in the apartment complex directly across from Jean. He says when he would go outside of his unit, he could hear Botham Jean singing gospel music.

According to Brown, he was home at the time Botham Jean was shot. He remembers looking out of the peephole, seeing Amber Guyger.

Guyger was found guilty of murder Wednesday and given a 10-year sentence.

She said she mistakenly walked into the wrong apartment in her complex and opened fire because she thought Jean was an intruder.

Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, who represents the Jean family, said Brown lived in constant fear of gun violence, and that’s why he was emotional on the witness stand.
