DPS identifies victims in fatal Smith Co. wreck

The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the victims in a fatal Smith County accident.

On Saturday, May 7, 2016, at approximately 10:30 p.m.,  troopers responded to a four-vehicle crash on Loop 49 in Smith County, five miles west of the city of Tyler.  

According to the preliminary crash investigation, and SUV was traveling southbound on Loop 49 behind a Freightliner truck.  A car was traveling northbound on the same roadway.  The driver of the SUV attempted to pass the Freightliner in a no passing zone and struck the left side of the car. The SUV then hit a hatchback that was traveling behind the car.    
 
The driver of the SUV has been identified as Karol Ann Rank, 77, of Tyler. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead by Judge James Meredith.  A passenger in the vehicle was identified as Ted Rank, 87, also of Tyler. He was also taken to a Tyler hospital where he was later pronounced dead by Judge Meredith.
 
The driver of the hatchback was identified as Skyler Todd Harper, 34, of Lindale. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Gary Alfred.
 
The driver of the car was identified as Adam Christopher Ward, 36, of Richardson. He was treated and released at the scene.
 
The driver of the Freightliner was identified as Anthony Douglas Rankin, 48, of Cleburne.  He was treated and released at the scene.
