UPDATE: Suspect identified in Tuesday’s standoff with Smith County Sheriffs deputies

Smith County Sheriff’s office released the name of the man who was involved in an hours-long standoff with law enforcement Tuesday.

According to an arrest affidavit, Nasir Saleh-Saad Jabr, 35 of Tyler.

Online jail records show that Jabr has had a lengthy criminal history, with arrests including burglary, drug possession, and public intoxication.


The suspect has been taken into custody, according to Smith County deputies.

Officials used a flash-bang to get the suspect out of the vehicle in which he was taken off by ambulance.

Larry Christian with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office tells KETK News that the suspect was not willing to cooperate and had firearms inside the vehicle, prompting them to end the standoff that lasted over four hours.

“Broke the glass, the back glass of the vehicle, through what’s commonly referred to as a flash bang into the vehicle, y’all may have heard it,” said Christian. “Once the flash-bang went off , they were able to successfully enter the drivers door forcefully and they pulled him out and took him into custody without incident,” said Christian.

The suspect has not been identified as of Tuesday evening.


TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Smith County deputies are currently in a standoff with a man at the Econo Lodge on Loop 323, according to law enforcement.

The call came in around 2:30 p.m. that officials made a traffic stop in which the suspect pulled into the Econo Lodge, locked the doors, and refused to exit the vehicle.

Deputies have taken a female into custody that was with the suspect. According to officials, he has a felony warrant out for his arrest.

Loop 323 is currently blocked off at Gentry as armored vehicles and a SWAT team is assessing the situation. It is unknown if the man is armed.
