KETK – Back in mid-July, how many of you thought we would actually have a high school football season in the Piney Woods?
Now, how many of you thought that season would get canceled halfway through?
Truth is a few teams did lose their seasons. Some saw their 2020 campaign end on a forfeit.
But the grand majority of our area teams managed to play on.
Sure there were cancellations, postponements, games rescheduled (some to Monday, Tuesday, etc.), frustration, genuine concern for those ill and their loved ones.
But just as we as a society have persevered through this arduous COVID-19 pandemic, so did they.
And when the dust settled three East Texas teams reached state championship games.
Two of them played each other as Carthage and Gilmer squared off in the 4A Division 2 Final.
And another, Lindale, made its first appearance in a title game.
Carthage affirmed its dynasty, winning its eighth state crown in 13 years in dominant fashion. A tremendous run of success all under head coach Scott Surratt, which now contends as the greatest dynasty ever in the entire State of Texas.
